Abdulbasit Ishaq, a promising young student, was killed by the military during a military-Shiite clash in Zaria amid a pro-Palestinian protest. |
The Arewa Students Parliament vehemently condemns the unfortunate incident that occurred during the Military-Shiite clash in the late hours of Friday, April 5th, 2024, resulting in the tragic death of Abdulbasit Ishaq, a promising youth, due to a stray bullet.
This was contained in a statement signed by Rt. Rhimt. Comr. Aliyu Usman, the Deputy Speaker of Arewa Students obtained by Daily Struggle Newspaper on Sunday, April 7, 2024.
The statement narrated that; the killing of Abdulbasit has not only robbed of his life but has also left a scar in the community, stirring fear and unrest among its residents.
The Arewa Students call on authorities to set up an investigation committee into the matter and ensure that all culprits are brought to book.
“We, the Arewa Students Parliament, hereby call upon the Federal Government, State Government, and Sabon Gari Local Government to expedite investigations into this matter and ensure that all culprits involved in this reprehensible act are swiftly brought to justice”, the statement added.
“Those responsible for this senseless loss of life must be held accountable for their actions, and we urge the authorities to take decisive measures to prevent such tragedies from recurring in the future. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Abdulbasit Ishaq during this difficult time, and we stand in solidarity with the community of Sabon Gari as they seek justice and healing”, the statement concludes.
An eyewitness account who prefers to remain anonymous and spoke to our reporter said that Abdulbasit Ishaq was not among the protesters, but a stray bullet hit him when the military clamped down on the protesters.
“He was at a shop which later I learned was his mom’s shop. He was trying to close the shop when a stray bullet hit him”, the anonymous said.
“After observing his Juma'at prayer in a mosque called Muinudeen in Yoruba street, realizing there was a clash around, he rushed to the market to assist his mum to pack their items and leave the vicinity. At that point of doing that, he was shot at his mum's shop while packing close to the junction of the New Market main gate”, he stressed.
