In a passionate plea to Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Executive Governor of Kano State, concerned citizens have urgently called for action to halt the indiscriminate cutting down of trees across various institutions in the state.

This call comes amidst a record-breaking heatwave gripping Kano, raising temperatures to unprecedented levels in a statement on Friday, 26 April 2024 signed by Ismail Auwal, the Convener of the Make Kano Green Initiative.

The citizens while acknowledging the commendable efforts of the governor's administration in launching the 2.5 million trees initiative to combat climate change, the citizens expressed alarm over reports of tree felling in key locations such as the Kano School of Nursing, Infectious Diseases Hospital, Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital, and Yadakunya General Hospital, known as Bela Leprosy Hospital among others under the ministry of health of the state.

"These trees not only provide shade and reduce the urban heat island effect, but also serve as a natural barrier against pollution, improve air quality, and support biodiversity. Their destruction will only exacerbate the heatwave's impact on our communities, particularly the most vulnerable populations, such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing medical conditions", the statement emphasized.

In their urgent appeal, the citizens call upon the governor to take immediate action; "Stop the indiscriminate cutting down of trees in hospitals and schools, conduct an investigation into the matter and hold those responsible accountable, develop and implement a comprehensive tree conservation and planting plan, prioritizing areas with high population density and vulnerability to heat stress."

While commending the governor's environmental initiatives, the citizens stress the importance of ensuring consistency in actions to avoid undermining progress. They express hope for a prompt response and action from the governor's office to address this critical issue.

The Make Kano Green Initiative urged all citizens to unite to safeguard the state's trees to secure a sustainable future for generations.

"We commend your administration's efforts to address environmental issues and promote sustainability. The 2.5 million trees initiative is a laudable project that will have a lasting impact on our state's ecosystem.

"However, we must ensure that our actions are consistent and do not undermine our progress. We look forward to your prompt response and action on this critical matter", the statement concluded.
