The Commissioner of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Ahmed Baba Suleiman Yumu, along with his Permanent Secretary, Barrister Mairo Mohammed Mann, and the management and staff of the ministry, received with shock the news of the collapse of a mine pit in Galadiman Kogo under Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State. This tragic incident has trapped over 30 artisanal miners.
In a release signed by Habibu Abubakar Wushishi, Director of Media and Strategy, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, the ministry stated that in collaboration with other agencies and professional stakeholders, they are doing their best to rescue the trapped miners. Despite it being over twenty-four hours since the collapse occurred, rescue efforts are ongoing despite the difficult terrain, insecurity in the area, and the possibility of further collapses if the rescue effort is not conducted professionally and cautiously.
The Commissioner and his Permanent Secretary once again appeal to artisanal miners to be cautious in their mining procedures and call on relevant authorities to monitor, supervise, and prevent the unchecked spread of mining activities throughout the state to avert future occurrences.
The ministry appeals for patience, understanding, and prayers from all Nigerlites and Nigerians for the successful rescue of these innocent artisanal miners.
