The Executive Chairman of the Jigawa Internal Revenue Service (JIRS), Dr. Nasir Sabo Idris, has been actively ensuring smooth revenue collection in line with globally accepted best practices and standards across Jigawa state.

As a prolific banker with extensive experience in the banking industry and an expert in revenue collection, Dr. Nasir Sabo Idris has served for many years in the Federal Inland Revenue Service of Nigeria.

Dr. Nasir Sabo Idris holds two master's degrees and a PhD from the University of London. He has distinguished himself through excellence, determination, focus, and maintaining outstanding records in public service and development initiatives.

Upon his appointment by His Excellency, Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa state, to steer the affairs of the Jigawa Internal Revenue Service as Executive Chairman, many reforms were recorded within a short period after his assumption of office.

JIRS Summary of Achievements

1. Improvement in Taxpayer Database: The number of registered taxpayers in Jigawa state increased from 5,000 to 16,000 from September 2023 to date.

2. IGR Improvement: Jigawa state's annual Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), as published by the National Bureau of Statistics and the Joint Tax Board, increased from N20.5 billion in 2022 to N26.7 billion in 2023, representing about a 30% improvement.

3. Automation of Revenue Collection Process: JIRS has introduced electronic payment of taxes and levies through the Remita and PayDirect platforms, which it is working to enforce throughout the state.

4. Jigawa State Enlightenment and Engagement Tax Teams: Tax teams were introduced to educate and sensitize taxpayers throughout Jigawa state to encourage voluntary tax compliance.

5. Mobilizing and Registering Artisans: About 3,000 artisans have been mobilized and registered for tax purposes. These artisans were paired with big contractors to engage them, encouraging voluntary tax compliance.

6. Facilitating Tax-for-Service Arrangements: A tax-for-service arrangement with the Hadejia market resulted in the registration of over 1,000 additional taxpayers from the market.

7. Introduction of Consumption Tax Teams: Consumption tax teams were introduced to collect and enforce taxes from hotels, restaurants, and entertainment centers throughout Jigawa state every Wednesday.

8. Introduction of Single Haulage Collection Teams: These teams were established throughout major markets in Jigawa state.

9. Introduction of Road Taxes Enforcement Teams: Road taxes enforcement teams were introduced throughout the state.

10. Regular Joint Enforcement: Joint enforcement activities are conducted regularly with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and Nigeria Civil Defence.

The Board of Internal Revenue has also completed all necessary arrangements to automate the entire road tax collection system, including auto registration for number plates and vehicle licenses across Jigawa state.
