Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, held a meeting with key stakeholders in the mining sector during his visit to São Paulo, Brazil. The meeting aimed at fostering partnerships to enhance and modernize artisanal mining in Niger State.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, Governor Bago disclosed his administration’s plan to organize miners into cooperatives. He explained that responsible mining involves ethical practices, environmental stewardship, community engagement, and a balance between productivity and sustainability, alongside a commitment to social responsibility.

Governor Bago reiterated that the initiatives and strategies being developed are not only designed to improve the working conditions of artisanal miners but also to promote the collective marketing of their products. He highlighted that the establishment of cooperatives would provide a structured framework for miners, enabling them to sell their products more efficiently and sustainably, while reducing the risks associated with their work.

The governor further emphasized that the project is expected to uplift the livelihoods of miners by promoting safer mining practices across Niger State. Miners will also be provided with standardized equipment that adheres to safety and operational guidelines, promoting both economic growth and environmental protection.

These efforts are part of Governor Bago’s ongoing mission to transition artisanal miners in Niger State towards more sustainable practices while safeguarding them from risks such as mine collapses and exposure to hazardous substances like lead poisoning.
