On 17th October 2024, the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University, in collaboration with Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu (CON), Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, distributed vital agricultural inputs to adopted village farmers across Kaduna State. This initiative, part of an Executive Project, aims to enhance agricultural productivity and ensure food security in the region. Key inputs provided included seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, farm implements, and threshers, all intended to improve farming efficiency and sustainability.
The event began with an introduction of notable dignitaries, including IAR's Executive Director, Prof. Ado Yusuf, Deputy Director Prof. Nafiu Abdu, and Tanimu Yakubu from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in Abuja. Prof. Shehu Garki Ado was also recognized for his valuable contributions to the success of the project.
Prof. Ado Yusuf underscored the significance of the intervention, particularly highlighting the distribution of Tela Maize and Rice seedlings, which are expected to significantly improve crop yields and contribute to food security. He also announced plans for a comprehensive training program that will cover production techniques, post-harvest management, and agribusiness, equipping farmers with the necessary knowledge and skills to fully benefit from the inputs.
In his goodwill message, Tanimu Yakubu from ICPC emphasized the government's commitment to transparency and accountability in the distribution process, ensuring that the resources reach the intended beneficiaries and help alleviate poverty. He also stressed the importance of monitoring and follow-up mechanisms to prevent misuse and ensure the security of agricultural initiatives.
Farmers in attendance expressed their deep appreciation for the support, with many expressing optimism about the positive impact the inputs would have on their agricultural activities. Traditional leaders and farmers praised both IAR and Senator Bagudu for their proactive efforts in addressing the needs of the agricultural community, recognizing the tools and knowledge provided as essential for transforming their farming practices and achieving better harvests.
The event concluded with a strong sense of hope and excitement as farmers left eager to implement the tools and training they had received, setting the stage for a brighter future in agriculture for Kaduna State.
