*Secures ₦15 Billion for Hostels & Senate Building

The Governor of Niger State, Honorable Mohammed Umaru Bago, has announced plans to establish Nigeria’s first Sub-National Research Institute at Abdulkadir Kure University (AKU), Minna.

Governor Bago disclosed this during the inaugural matriculation ceremony of AKU Minna for the 2023/2024 academic session. He stated that the Research Institute would focus on agriculture, science, and innovation.

The Governor also revealed that the state has secured ₦15 billion for the construction of hostels and a Senate building, along with an additional ₦500 million provided to support the successful launch of six new faculties.

While congratulating the first cohort of 86 students, Governor Bago announced that each student would receive a scholarship of one million Naira. He emphasized that indiscipline would not be tolerated, noting that 50 scholarship slots would be reserved for students excelling in character and academic performance, especially those studying medicine and related courses.

He further shared that the state aims to attract lecturers and professors to the institution, and has secured scholarships and exchange programs for some of the university's lecturers and students.

The Vice Chancellor of AKU Minna, Prof. Muhammad Aliyu Paiko, remarked that the matriculation ceremony marked a significant milestone for the university. He praised Governor Bago's dedication to advancing education in Niger State, describing him as a beacon of hope for the state’s educational development.

Prof. Paiko also revealed that the National Universities Commission (NUC) would conduct a verification exercise for six additional faculties at the university on November 15.

The Pro-Chancellor of AKU Minna, Prof. Mohammed Kuta Yahaya, commended Governor Bago's vision in establishing the university, describing it as a source of pride for the state. He affirmed that the university's council is working diligently to establish the institution as a world-class university.
