In a passionate open letter to Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, the All Ja'afariyya Shia Muslim Community in Nigeria has called for an end to what they describe as a "continued persecution and intimidation" of the Shia community in the state.
The letter, signed by National Public Relations Officer Abdullah Hassan Shazy, highlights a series of distressing events, including a recent incident involving the demolition of a local engineer's home.
The community, which has been registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission since 1999, expressed deep concerns about the ongoing plight of Shia Muslims in Kaduna State. The letter references the "Zaria Massacre of 2015" as a turning point, stating that since then, the government has "politicized the lives and properties of the Shia community through periodic killings, threats, intimidation, and demolition of property."
On October 21, 2024, the community learned that, following a notice of evacuation issued at 6:00 PM on October 19, armed men accompanied by a bulldozer demolished the house of Engineer Yahya Gilima, located at No. 11 Yahaya Imam Road, Makali GRA, Kaduna.
The letter describes Engr. Gilima as a "good Muslim" who has lived peacefully in his home for over 22 years and has always complied with the law. "We strongly condemn this heartless and barbaric act of oppression against an innocent citizen," the statement reads.
The letter goes on to criticize both the previous administration led by Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai and the current government under Senator Uba Sani for their alleged "human rights violations against Shia adherents." It warns that any attempt to eliminate Shia followers in Kaduna will only lead to "perpetual fear and apprehension in the state, in particular, and northern Nigeria in general."
The community urges Governor Sani to focus on policies that promote "peaceful coexistence" and socio-economic development in the state. They also emphasize the need for the governor to verify security information from agents who may exploit fabricated intelligence for personal gain.
In closing, the letter appeals for a more humane approach from the government, stating, "We advise His Excellency to focus on serving the good people of Kaduna State, rather than paying attention to the interests of privileged elites and foreign nations." The letter ends with a prayer for the protection of Nigeria, particularly Northern Nigeria.
The All Ja'afariyya Shia Muslim Community continues to seek justice and support as they navigate the challenges faced by their community in Kaduna State.
