Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of elder statesman and revered Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, who died at the age of 97.

The governor described the news of his passing as a great loss to the nation.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Mukhtar Gidado on Tuesday, Governor Mohammed extended his heartfelt condolences to the Clark family, the Ijaw Nation, and all Nigerians mourning the loss of this iconic leader.

Bala said: “Chief Edwin Clark was a distinguished nationalist, a fearless advocate for justice, and a pillar of wisdom whose immense contributions to Nigeria’s political and socio-economic development will never be forgotten.”

“Throughout his life, Chief Clark remained a voice of reason, a defender of equity, and a symbol of integrity in public service. His steadfast commitment to national unity and development earned him the respect and admiration of generations.”

“His unwavering dedication to justice and fairness defined his political career. He stood firmly for the rights of the Niger Delta people and tirelessly championed resource control and regional development,” Governor Mohammed stated.

The governor urged Chief Clark’s family, friends, and all Nigerians to take solace in the fact that he lived a life of service, leaving behind a legacy of patriotism, courage, and leadership.

He prayed that the Almighty grants his soul eternal rest and gives his family, the Ijaw people, and the entire nation the strength to bear this monumental loss.

The Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo Town, Delta State, officially announced Chief Clark’s passing in a statement signed by Prof. C. C. Clark.

“The Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family wishes to announce the passing of Chief (Dr.) Sen. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, OFR, CON, on Monday, 17th February 2025,” the statement read.

As the leader of the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Chief Clark was a fearless advocate for his people, playing a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s political discourse. His passing marks the end of an era for the Ijaw Nation and the entire Niger Delta region.

Governor Mohammed concluded his tribute by acknowledging Chief Clark’s indelible impact, “His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Nigeria has lost a great statesman, but his contributions will forever remain in our national history.”
