The House of Representatives has confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu consulted its members before deciding to declare a State of Emergency in Rivers State.

House spokesperson Akintunde Rotimi stated that a formal letter notifying the legislature of the decision had been received and would be presented by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas during Wednesday’s plenary session.

“In response to multiple inquiries, I can confirm that the National Assembly was duly consulted by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, before making this decision,” the statement read.

Rotimi added that key National Assembly leaders, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, and House Leader Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, met with the President and National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, ahead of the official announcement.

The meeting was also attended by top security officials, including Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, State Security Service (SSS) Director-General Adeola Ajayi, and National Intelligence Agency (NIA) Director-General Mohammed Mohammed.

According to the statement, all present were fully briefed on the President’s intentions and unanimously expressed their support.

“Furthermore, Mr. President’s formal letter informing the House of Representatives of his decision and seeking approval in line with Section 305 of the Constitution has been transmitted. It will be read during plenary on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, followed by legislative deliberations,” the statement concluded
