The Niger State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has announced plans to develop a comprehensive strategy aimed at reducing economic crimes and promoting ethical conduct within society.
Council Chairman, Comrade Abu Nmodu, disclosed this while receiving the Acting Zonal Director of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Bawa Usman Kaltungo, during a courtesy visit to the NUJ Secretariat in Minna.
Nmodu acknowledged the growing threat of cybercrime in the state and reaffirmed the union’s commitment to promoting responsible journalism as a tool in combating such offenses. He also emphasized the need for collaborative training initiatives to equip journalists with the skills required to report on EFCC activities in line with global best practices.
In his remarks, Acting Zonal Director Kaltungo stressed the importance of synergy between the EFCC and the media in addressing financial crimes such as illegal mining and cybercrime, which pose significant risks to Nigeria’s economic stability.
He noted that the fight against economic crimes cannot be waged by the EFCC alone, calling for a concerted effort to educate the public about the commission’s operations and counter widespread misconceptions.
Kaltungo also highlighted recent arrests linked to illegal mining and warned against the rising “get-rich-quick” mentality among Nigerian youth, describing it as a dangerous trend that undermines the country’s development.
