BREAKING: Political Earthquake: Gov. Diri, Cabinet, and Lawmakers Quit PDP

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), his spokesperson, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, announced on Thursday.

Alabrah, in a brief statement, confirmed the governor’s resignation but did not disclose the reasons behind the move or whether Diri intends to join another political party. Speculation, however, is rife that the governor may be considering options within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a dramatic twist, all PDP members in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, along with commissioners in the State Executive Council, have also resigned from the party.

Sources told Daily Struggle that Governor Diri is currently meeting with members of the State Executive Council in Yenagoa. The Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, is said to be attending the closed-door meeting.

The development comes just hours after Governor Diri and former President Goodluck Jonathan jointly attended the commissioning of the Best Western Plus Hotel in Yenagoa.

Before becoming governor, Diri served in various political capacities, including Commissioner under then-Governor Goodluck Jonathan and Principal Secretary to former Governor Seriake Dickson. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2015 and to the Senate in 2019, both under the PDP platform.

Diri assumed office as governor of Bayelsa State in 2020 following a Supreme Court judgment and was re-elected under the PDP in 2023.

As of press time, the PDP leadership in Bayelsa and Abuja had yet to react to the governor’s resignation.
