Bauchi, Nigeria — The Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, on Tuesday led a high-profile Senate delegation to the family of the late prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, to express condolences over his passing.

The visit followed a special resolution moved on the Senate floor by Senator Shehu Buba, which recognised the late cleric’s lifetime contributions to Islam, peace, and national unity.

In a parallel gesture, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas, led a separate House delegation to the condolence visit held at the late scholar’s mosque in the Makera area of Bauchi. The delegations were received by Bauchi State Deputy Governor, Muhammad Auwal Jatau.

Senator Barau described Sheikh Dahiru’s death as “a monumental loss to Nigeria, Africa, and the world,” highlighting that the scholar’s teachings and influence transcended continents.

“At today’s plenary, senators, both Muslim and Christian, unanimously expressed deep sorrow over the cleric’s passing,” Barau said. “We are here on behalf of the Senate to convey our condolences to the government and people of Bauchi State, to the family of Sheikh Dahiru, and to the entire Muslim community.”

He urged the family to uphold the late scholar’s virtues and legacy, praying for God’s mercy and forgiveness upon him.

The Senate delegation included Senator Sani Musa, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance; Senator Muttati Dan Dutse, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Higher Education (Universities and Polytechnics); Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Livestock and Animal Husbandry; Senator Abdul’aziz Yar’adua, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army; and oil magnate Jack Rich.

On his part, Speaker Abbas noted that the House delegation represented all 360 members and described Sheikh Dahiru’s passing as a global loss.

“The value, influence, and international stature of Malam Dahiru extended far beyond Nigeria and Africa. Scholars around the world recognize the exemplary life he lived in service to Islam,” Abbas said.

The Speaker extended condolences to the Bauchi State Government, the Emir of Bauchi, the family, and the wider community.

Members of the House delegation included Chief Whip Hon. Usman Bello Kumo; Hon. Abubakar Kabir Bichi, Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations; Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream); Aliyu Sani Madaki, Deputy Minority Leader; Hon. Nnolim Nnaji, Chairman of the House Committee on Ports and Harbours; and members of the Bauchi caucus, including Bappa Aliyu Misau and Ali Garu.

Speaking on behalf of the bereaved family, one of Sheikh Dahiru’s sons expressed profound gratitude to both delegations for their support.

Condolence visits continue to pour into Bauchi following the cleric’s passing last Thursday, with delegations arriving from across Nigeria and other African countries to pay their respects.
