President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, and approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.
Egbetokun tendered his resignation letter to the President, citing pressing family considerations, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The President, who received the resignation earlier in the day, expressed profound appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation. He commended the outgoing police chief for his dedication, professionalism and commitment to strengthening the country’s internal security architecture during his tenure.
Egbetokun was appointed Inspector-General of Police in June 2023 for a four-year term scheduled to end in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.
In announcing the new appointment, the Presidency said the decision to name AIG Disu in an acting capacity was taken in view of the current security challenges confronting the country and in accordance with extant laws and legal guidance.
President Tinubu expressed confidence that Disu’s experience, operational expertise and leadership qualities would provide steady direction for the Nigeria Police Force at a critical period.
The statement further disclosed that, in compliance with the Police Act 2020, the President will soon convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police. Following the Council’s consideration, his name will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security, enhancing institutional capacity and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable and fully equipped to carry out its constitutional responsibilities.
