Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has directed the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, to work closely with the Ministries of Works, Youth and Social Development to ensure the immediate repair of blown-off roofs and other damaged structures at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Paiko.
The damage was caused by a windstorm that occurred on the 25th of this month, with no casualties recorded.
An assessment team comprising the Commissioner for Education, Dr Hadiza Asabe Mohammed; Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Jacob Baba Yisa; Director-General of the NYSC, Brig. Gen. Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu; and the State Coordinator, Mrs Martina Shuaibu-Ibrahim, had earlier inspected the affected facilities.
The damaged structures include male corps members’ hostels, the multipurpose hall, the kitchen, staff quarters, and parts of the State Coordinator’s residence.
In a statement issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor described the incident as unfortunate and concerning, noting that it had placed corps members and camp officials in a difficult situation.
He emphasised that the prompt repair of the affected facilities would enable corps members to continue their orientation course without disruption.
The governor commended the assessment team and the Principal of Abubakar Dada Secondary School, Paiko, for their collaboration in swiftly providing classrooms as temporary accommodation for displaced corps members.
Governor Bago also reassured the NYSC of his administration’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all corps members serving in the state.
