The four-day Ahmadu Bello University Students’ Representative Council (ABUSRC) Annual Cultural Carnival came to an end on Sunday, August 16, 2026, with a colourful cultural display by students representing different ethnic groups and states across Nigeria.

The closing ceremony was held at the Mamman Kontagora Square, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where students showcased their diverse cultural heritage through traditional dances, attires, greetings and other forms of cultural expression.

Students representing various tribes and cultural groups from the 36 states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), participated in the display, highlighting the richness and diversity of Nigeria’s cultural heritage.

The event also featured traditional title holders who showcased aspects of their respective traditions, adding colour and significance to the cultural celebration.

As part of the ceremony, representatives of the different cultural groups extended traditional greetings to the “King of ABU,” a symbolic role occupied by the ABUSRC President, Comrade Abdulrahman Halliru Saraki. He sat in his traditional attire at the palace setting alongside his entourage as various groups paid cultural homage to him.

Speaking to Daily Struggle Newspaper, several participants expressed delight at the success of the carnival, describing it as an important platform for bringing students from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds together.

The participants said the annual event had helped to strengthen unity among students while reminding members of the university community of the diversity that exists within ABU.

They noted that such diversity, when properly harnessed, could promote peaceful coexistence, mutual understanding and cooperation among students, regardless of their ethnic or cultural backgrounds.

The participants also emphasised that Ahmadu Bello University remains a cosmopolitan institution, bringing together students from different parts of Nigeria and beyond.

The carnival was held under the theme, “Unity in Diversity: Celebrating Our Heritage, Strengthening Our Future,” and featured a series of activities throughout the four-day programme.

Earlier during the carnival, the ABUSRC President, Comrade Abdulrahman Halliru Saraki, called for the event to be recognised as a national festival, arguing that ABU represents a “mini Nigeria” because of the diverse backgrounds of its students.

The Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Aliyu Halilu, also commended the university administration for its support towards the success of the carnival.

He expressed appreciation to the University Advancement, the Deanery of Student Affairs and other stakeholders who contributed to the event, while noting that the organisers remained open to further collaboration for future editions.

The closing cultural display brought the 2026 ABUSRC Annual Cultural Carnival to a colourful conclusion, reinforcing its message of unity, cultural appreciation and peaceful coexistence within the university community.
