The Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Professor Adamu Ahmed, has reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to promoting national unity and strengthening cultural diversity among students from different parts of Nigeria and other African countries.

Professor Ahmed stated this while speaking with journalists, including a Daily Struggle Reporter, during the ABUSRC Annual Durbar held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, as part of the ongoing ABUSRC Annual Cultural Carnival.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed satisfaction with the success of this year’s event, noting that it had recorded greater success compared to the previous edition.

He said the major objective of the cultural carnival was to showcase the unity existing within the university community and demonstrate how the institution contributes to the development and service of Nigeria.

“We are extremely happy that this year’s event is even much more successful than the one we had last year. The whole objective is to showcase the unity that we have in this university in the service of our great country,” he said.

According to him, ABU continues to admit students from all parts of Nigeria, as well as students from other African countries, making the university a diverse academic community.

“We admit students from every part of Nigeria, and even in Africa. You can see quite a number of students from other African countries; Chad, Cameroon and Niger are also represented here,” Professor Ahmed said.

He added that the university would continue to provide an environment where Nigerians and students from across Africa could benefit from the diversity within the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor further stressed that ABU was founded on the principle of promoting national unity, describing the preservation and strengthening of that ideal as a key responsibility of the institution.

“This university was established on the principle of promoting the unity of our country, Nigeria, which is why we consider that mission extremely important. We must create opportunities to further strengthen unity and demonstrate to Nigerians that ABU remains committed to the ideals upon which it was founded,” he said.

Professor Ahmed described ABU as a university belonging to Nigerians and one that also provides opportunities for students from other African countries.

The ABUSRC Annual Cultural Carnival, which commenced on Thursday, August 13, 2026, is being held under the theme, “Unity in Diversity: Celebrating Our Heritage, Strengthening Our Future.”

The four-day event features a range of cultural activities, including a cooking competition involving students representing different states and cultural backgrounds.

The ABUSRC Annual Durbar was one of the major activities of the carnival and brought together members of the university community to celebrate Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and diversity.
