The Federation of Muslim Women's Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has resolved to strengthen the empowerment of women and girls through education, healthcare, entrepreneurship and digital skills development.
The resolution was reached at the federation’s 41st National Conference held in Umuahia, Abia State, which attracted about 600 delegates from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The conference also brought together Islamic scholars, government representatives and other stakeholders to deliberate on issues affecting women, girls and families across the country.
In a communique issued at the end of the conference, FOMWAN expressed concern over the growing challenges of insecurity, poverty, displacement, violence and humanitarian crises, saying they continue to expose women and children to vulnerability and loss of livelihoods.
The federation also identified inadequate access to education for girls, finance, markets, productive assets, digital skills and sustainable economic opportunities as major challenges confronting women and girls.
To address some of these challenges, FOMWAN resolved to establish a National Women and Girls Mentorship Programme aimed at promoting character formation, leadership development, career guidance, entrepreneurship and life skills.
The organisation also resolved to pursue the establishment of a Digital Academy to equip women and girls with relevant digital skills, while strengthening its programmes in education, healthcare, child protection and economic empowerment.
FOMWAN further pledged to intensify advocacy against violence, exploitation and discrimination against women and girls, while promoting their participation in peacebuilding, civic engagement and community development.
The federation called for stronger collaboration among governments, religious and traditional institutions, development partners and other stakeholders to build resilient women, stronger families and peaceful communities.
It said such partnerships were essential to advancing the wellbeing of women and girls and contributing to the development of a more resilient Nigeria.
