Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has expressed sadness over the deaths of 37 youths reportedly involved in mining activities in Niger State.
Abdulsalami described the incident as a painful loss to the families of the victims, their communities, Niger State and Nigeria as a whole.
In a statement, the former Head of State extended his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for strength and comfort for those affected by the tragedy.
He also called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths, stressing the need for the relevant authorities to establish the facts and take appropriate measures to prevent a recurrence.
Abdulsalami urged government agencies and other stakeholders to strengthen safety measures at mining sites, particularly to protect young people whose livelihoods depend on mining and other economic activities.
He further appealed for calm among the affected communities and called on the authorities to provide the necessary support to the victims' families.
