The Executive Governor of Niger State, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, led a state government delegation to a three-day prayer session held in honour of the 37 artisanal miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna.
The special prayer, held at the Central Mosque in Tunga, was led by the Chief Imam of Minna, Malam Jibril Isah, who offered prayers for the repose of the souls of the deceased.
Speaking at the event, Farmer Umaru Bago urged the youth to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring them that the government is taking necessary steps to address the situation.
He also appealed to Nigerlites to shun violence and continue to obey the law.
Governor Bago disclosed that the state government is doing everything possible to get to the root of the incident, assuring that the findings of the investigation would be made public upon its conclusion.
He said the government, in collaboration with the Minna Emirate, is compiling data on the families of all those who died, with plans to provide them with palliatives and other forms of support, including assistance to those currently recuperating in hospitals.
The governor further disclosed that the government has been holding a series of meetings with the Nigeria Miners Association and the Mineworkers Association to discuss the way forward.
He, however, reiterated that the ban on mining activities in the state remains in force.
