The gubernatorial candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Zamfara State, Senator Kabiru Marafa, has promised to prioritise the fight against insecurity in the state if elected governor.
Marafa said he would give his administration two years to deliver on the security responsibilities within the jurisdiction of the state government, promising to resign if it failed to achieve at least 75 per cent of its security objectives during that period.
The NDC candidate made the statement while speaking with journalists in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, shortly after meeting with various groups as part of his campaign consultations.
Marafa said his decision to contest the governorship election was driven by his desire to contribute to restoring peace and promoting development in the state.
He expressed confidence that his experience and capacity would enable him to provide leadership capable of addressing the challenges confronting Zamfara, particularly insecurity.
On his proposed strategy for tackling insecurity, Marafa said he would not disclose the full details of his security plan before assuming office.
He, however, assured voters that, if elected, his administration would commence implementation of a comprehensive security plan after the transition period.
“I will give myself two years to achieve the security responsibilities within the purview of the state government,” he said, adding that the Federal Government would be expected to address security responsibilities within its own jurisdiction.
Marafa further pledged that if, after two years in office, his administration failed to achieve at least 75 per cent of its security objectives, he would resign as governor.
The candidate also spoke on the party's ongoing consultations ahead of the election, saying the unveiling of the campaign council would be followed by a five-day programme of engagements with critical stakeholders and residents across the state.
According to him, the consultations are aimed at assessing the party's level of acceptance, identifying areas requiring greater attention and strengthening its campaign structure ahead of the election.
He said members of the campaign leadership would be drawn from different parts of the state, with representatives from various areas.
Marafa explained that the party commenced visits and meetings with different groups on Monday, September 14, as part of its wider consultation programme.
He added that the engagements would provide an opportunity for the party to interact directly with the electorate and listen to their concerns on issues affecting the state.
