As part of activities marking its 50th anniversary, the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Kaduna State Chapter, has carried out a tree-planting exercise at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria.
The team, led by Prof. Hafsat Sulaiman Maiwada, was received by the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Prof. Muhammad Ibrahim Zaria, on behalf of the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Ahmed Umdagas Hamidu.
Speaking during the exercise, Prof. Maiwada said the initiative was part of MWAN’s contribution to combating climate change, promoting environmental health and creating a greener and healthier hospital environment for patients and staff.
She said the 50th anniversary was not only a celebration of five decades of service by women in medicine, but also a renewed commitment to sustainable healthcare and community development.
She disclosed that the association had been planting trees across Kaduna State and in some schools around Zaria, adding that MWAN chose ABUTH as one of the institutions for the exercise because of its strategic role in healthcare delivery in Northern Nigeria and its vast landmass, which requires greening.
In his response, the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Prof. Muhammad Ibrahim Zaria, thanked the association for the gesture and for choosing ABUTH as part of its anniversary activities.
He described the initiative as timely, particularly at a time when climate change, air pollution, flooding and erosion pose serious threats to public health.
Prof. Zaria added that the tree-planting exercise aligned with the United Nations’ objectives on combating climate change and the Federal Government’s green initiatives.
He assured the association that the hospital management would ensure proper nurturing and maintenance of the trees to maturity.
Highlights of the event included the symbolic planting of trees by the MWAN Chairperson, the CMAC and staff of ABUTH.
