Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, Atiku Abubakar, has called on security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the safe release of Ahmed Zakka, his wife and their infant child, reportedly abducted in Kaduna State.
Atiku made the appeal in a statement dated October 12, 2026, in which he expressed concern over a disturbing video of Zakka, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the insecurity threatening lives and families across Nigeria.
He condemned the circumstances surrounding the reported abduction, stressing that no Nigerian should be forced to plead for their life or the safety of their family at the hands of criminals.
“The thought of an infant caught in this ordeal is especially heartbreaking,” Atiku said, urging the relevant security agencies to act swiftly and decisively to rescue the family and other Nigerians still being held in captivity.
The ADC chieftain also linked the worsening security situation to the economic difficulties facing Nigerians, noting that many households were already struggling with the rising cost of food, transportation and other essential commodities.
According to him, insecurity further compounds these hardships by disrupting livelihoods and imposing emotional and financial burdens on affected families.
Atiku urged the government to move beyond assurances and implement a sustained and effective security response capable of rescuing abducted persons, protecting vulnerable communities and dismantling criminal networks responsible for kidnappings.
He maintained that Nigerians should be able to live, work and raise their families without the constant fear of violence.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the Zakka family and all families enduring the trauma of kidnapping,” he said, adding that the protection of every Nigerian life must remain an overriding responsibility of government.
