In a dramatic turn of events, an unspecified number of inmates managed to escape from the old Suleja Correctional Centre in Suleja local government area of Niger State. The daring escape followed a destructive rainstorm that tore through the facility late Wednesday night.
The storm, accompanied by heavy rainfall around 9 pm, wreaked havoc on parts of the old Suleja custodial centre, breaching its defenses and enabling several inmates to flee.
Eyewitnesses reported that the rainstorm inflicted significant damage to the building, particularly exposing the inner fence of the facility where inmates were housed.
Residents of Suleja town, who witnessed the chaos, recounted aiding in the capture of two escaped inmates, whom they promptly handed over to prison authorities.
A swift response ensued, with a joint team of security agents deployed to key areas and black spots in Suleja town to apprehend the fleeing prisoners.
