The National Hydro-electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has finalized plans to distribute starter packs worth N2 billion to 6,000 youths in its six primary catchment states. The Managing Director, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq-Yelwa, made the disclosure at a Stakeholders’ Youth Transformation Programme meeting held at its headquarters in Minna on Thursday.
Represented by the Assistant Director of Finance, Dr. Bala Mohammed, the Managing Director stated that the meeting aimed to ensure the seamless distribution of the items. He emphasized the importance of engaging youths, as future leaders, in various skills acquisition programs to help them become self-reliant.
He noted that this initiative would significantly alleviate the economic hardship by creating job opportunities. Sadiq-Yelwa added that the increased cost of items necessitated a review of the contract. According to him, the commission has received 95 percent of the items for onward distribution to the youths soon. He emphasized that the distribution process is at the completion stage.
The distribution includes trainees’ registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) at a 50 percent subsidy. The MD mentioned that the certificates were almost ready through the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) and the Minna Institute of Technology and Innovation (MITI), while guarantor forms have been distributed to ensure the proper utilization of the items and the completion of payments to the contractors.
Dr. Nana Ibrahim, Rector of MITI, whose institute trained the Niger trainees, explained that only committed and dedicated participants would be certified as beneficiaries.
The Secretary of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and Chairman of Rafi Local Government, Alhaji Ayuba Usman Katako, commended the unprecedented performance of N-HYPPADEC in various areas. He called for proper synergy with the local councils for effective communication and assured their support for the exercise to succeed.
According to the communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the participants appreciated the commission for the program. They called for more enlightenment and urged security agencies to monitor the beneficiaries.
The benefiting states include Kebbi, Kwara, Kogi, Niger, Benue, and Plateau for the first batch of the distribution.
