The Niger State Government has signed a tripartite agreement on food production with Niger Foods, the Niger State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB), and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Niger State Chapter.
The Chairman of Niger Foods, Mr. Sammy Adigun, signed on behalf of the State Government, while the Executive Chairman of NSUBEB, Muhammad Baba Ibrahim, signed on behalf of the Board. The Chairman of the NUT Niger State Chapter, Adamu Akayago, signed on behalf of the NUT.
The agreement will enable Niger Foods to supply farm inputs and other implements to teachers interested in engaging in crop production.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago commended the teachers for partnering with Niger Foods and assured them of continuous support. He encouraged other groups and associations to join his agricultural revolution, emphasizing that agriculture is the key to addressing food insecurity.
The Governor stated that the initiative would foster prosperity among stakeholders in the education sector. He added that houses and health centers would be built for the teachers, bringing benefits to future generations.
Mr. Sammy Adigun, Chairman of Niger Foods, announced that various farm inputs and implements would be provided to the benefiting teachers, including packs of sprayers, herbicides, and insecticides.
The Executive Chairman of NSUBEB, Muhammad Baba Ibrahim, described the agreement as a new chapter in the lives of teachers in the state. He disclosed that there are 25,000 teachers across the state, including about 3,000 administrators, with many already showing interest in the initiative.
Ibrahim stated that the initiative would increase food production, add value to teachers, and reduce the cost of feeding students.
Meanwhile, Governor Bago inspected the Niger Foods Tractors' Assembly Plant, expressing satisfaction with the progress. He announced plans to establish similar assembly plants in all 25 Local Government Areas of the state.
The Governor also visited a Niger Foods warehouse, which stores some of the 50,000 metric tons of food items to be distributed to all 25 Local Government Areas at a 50 percent discount.
Governor Bago remarked that the investment in agriculture is already yielding positive results, with significant harvests from dry season farming, and expressed optimism for even better future harvests.
