The Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Professor Kabiru Bala, has emphasized that the issues of climate change are real and increasingly evident, announcing that the university will plant 5,000 seedlings.

Professor Bala made this statement during the 2024 World Environmental Day Symposium/Tree Planting event held at the University’s Assembly Hall.

He noted that the program is timely and urged all ABU staff to participate by planting at least 10 trees in their homes to help mitigate the effects of climate change.

Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Administration, Professor Raymond Bako, the Vice Chancellor highlighted the stark contrast between the ABU campus and the Samaru area, where some streets lack a single tree, despite the fact that many university staff reside there.

The Vice-Chancellor advised communities to plant at least 10 trees and care for them until they are fully grown.

During the program, experts delivered various papers. Professor E.O. Iguisi presented on "Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience," while a paper titled "The Threatened Environment of Nigeria’s Sahel Region: A Historical Perspective" was presented by Professor E. Oyedele.

Other papers included "The Importance of Trees from the Christian Perspective" by Rev. Can. M.A. Gwems and "The Importance of Trees from the Islamic Perspective" by Professor Saidu Yunusa.

Seedlings were distributed to members of staff and neighboring communities of the university.
