The Niger State Vigilante Corps (NSVC) has long been recognized for its significant contributions to security in Niger State. From the tenure of Dr. Mu'azu Babangida Aliyu (Talban Minna) to Senator Abubakar Sani Bello, and now under Governor Umar Mohammed Bago, the role of these self-employed security agents has been pivotal.
While many organizations in community security have earned recognition and fostered strong relationships with both the state government and security forces, the NSVC's impact in Niger State is particularly noteworthy. The organization, led by Commander Nasiru Mohammed Manta, has received commendations from past governments and has consistently been supported.
Under Senator Sani Bello’s administration, the NSVC's management was entrusted to traditional councils, which facilitated a significant increase in membership. Today, the NSVC boasts over twenty thousand members across twenty-five local government areas in Niger State, under the continued leadership of Commander Nasiru Manta.
The NSVC has played a crucial role in combating banditry and other criminal activities in both urban and rural areas. They have been instrumental in addressing the menace of thieves and armed robbers who obstruct travellers and have made substantial contributions in tackling forest banditry alongside the army and police.
The dedication and cooperation of NSVC officers have been pivotal in their success. For example, during the tenure of Hon. Abdulmalik Sarkin-daji as Chairman of Mariga Local Government, the NSVC was instrumental in addressing banditry affecting farmers and shepherds. Their efforts were crucial in areas such as Mariga, Rafi, Wushishi, Munya, Kontagora, and Mashegu.
In a recent meeting, Hon. Abdulmalik Sarkin-daji, now the Speaker of the Niger State Legislative Assembly, praised the NSVC's contributions. He noted that as Chairman of Mariga, he recognized the value of the NSVC's efforts and later supported their training and collaboration with the Police Force when he became Commissioner for Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs. This support has been vital in overcoming security challenges in the state.
Hon. Sarkin-daji emphasized his commitment to supporting the NSVC and Commander Nasiru Mohammed Manta’s leadership. He highlighted that despite the absence of a salary or government allocation, the NSVC’s dedication to security is unwavering.
Commander Nasiru Manta began his vigilante work in local neighborhoods and has risen through the ranks to become the Commander of the NSVC. His journey from Minna Emirate to leadership roles in Chanchaga, Shiroro, and Munya local governments showcases his dedication and effectiveness.
Research confirms that many members of the NSVC have sustained injuries or lost their lives in the line of duty, but this has not deterred their commitment. Commander Nasiru Manta, hailing from Manta Village in Kuta District of Shiroro Local Government, is celebrated for his honesty, trustworthiness, and significant contributions to the fight against crime.
Under Governor Umar Mohammed Bago, the Niger State government has continued to support and encourage the NSVC, ensuring that their efforts remain robust and impactful.
