Nigerian students in Moscow, Russia, particularly those from Niger State, are facing the threat of deportation due to alleged delays in renewing their international passports.
The affected undergraduate students have raised concerns with their families back in Nigeria, highlighting their predicament as their passports near expiration. Reports indicate that these students' passports are set to expire this week, and despite efforts to renew them, the Nigerian Immigration Service in Russia has reportedly claimed a shortage of materials needed for the renewal process.
Alhaji Yakubu Tauheed Bina, a parent of one of the students, expressed frustration, noting that it would cost him over N5 million to arrange for his son to return to Nigeria solely to renew his passport.
Bina questioned why the Nigerian Embassy in Moscow has not been able to address this issue, despite the funding it receives from the federal government. He called on both the federal government and state governments to provide assistance to ensure the timely renewal and issuance of international passports for Nigerians abroad, to prevent the potential deportation of students and other citizens.
