President Bola Tinubu has approved a six-month extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS),Adewale Adeniyi.

The extension was announced in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, the extension will take effect immediately and is expected to run until February 2027.

It noted that Adeniyi’s current tenure was due to expire on August 1, 2026, before the approval of the extension by the President.

The Presidency said the decision was taken to enable the Comptroller-General to consolidate ongoing reforms, particularly the implementation of the National Single Window project.

It added that the extension would also ensure an orderly succession process within the Nigeria Customs Service.

Transition and administrative duties
During the extension period, Adeniyi is expected to work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to oversee key administrative responsibilities.

These include the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and the compulsory retirement of officers who have reached 60 years of age or completed 35 years in service.

Adeniyi joined the Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s.

He rose through the ranks over the years, becoming Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023.

He was later appointed Comptroller-General in June 2023 by President Tinubu.

The extension is expected to allow him to further drive reforms aimed at modernising Customs operations, improving revenue generation, and enhancing trade facilitation in Nigeria.
