The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Catherine Anene, disclosed this in a statement on Friday. She explained, “On August 8, 2024, at about 4:30 PM, while normal daily activities were ongoing in Ayati village, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, a large number of armed bandits invaded the village and began shooting sporadically at members of the community.”
Anene added that police officers in the area responded immediately and were able to repel the bandits. However, 15 people who sustained gunshot wounds during the attack were confirmed dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The Benue police spokesperson further stated that the incident also claimed the lives of two police officers who were among the team that responded to the distress call.
“The corpses have been deposited at General Hospital, Ukum, and an investigation is ongoing,” Anene said in the statement.
She also informed that the state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Hassan Yabanet, who visited Ayati for an on-the-spot assessment, commiserated with the families of the deceased and assured them of his commitment to combating crime in the area.
