Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, former Special Adviser to the late President Shehu Aliyu Shagari, has refuted a report published by The Punch newspaper claiming that he was among those who formed a new political group named "The League of Northern Democrats."
Alhaji Yakasai made this known in a statement signed on Wednesday, a copy of which was made available to journalists in Kano.
According to the statement, Alhaji Yakasai said, "Today, 21st August 2024, my attention was drawn to an online report by The Punch newspaper, where my name was mentioned as part of a new political group named 'The League of Northern Democrats.'"
He further disclosed, "I have been receiving calls and messages from well-meaning Nigerians inquiring about my membership in this group, to which I am not affiliated."
Alhaji Yakasai added, "I initially did not intend to respond to this publication, but it became necessary due to the volume of calls and messages, and to ensure that the Nigerian public is accurately informed."
The elder statesman concluded by stating, "To set the record straight, I urge the general public to disregard the report by Punch Online Media, as I am not part of the organizers or the organization."
