Dr. Mahe Dange, former Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), has cautioned the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State against boycotting the upcoming local government elections.
Dange made his remarks during a media parley in Zaria on Tuesday, specifically criticizing the directives given by former Governor Attahiru Bafarawa, urging his supporters to shun the polls.
"This move is perceived by many concerned members of the PDP as sabotage and a calculated attempt to undermine the party at the grassroots level in Sokoto State," Dange stated.
He warned that the decision could be seen as an attempt to give the major opposition party an advantage over the PDP. "This action is not only dishonest but grossly unpatriotic," he added.
Dange urged Bafarawa to reconsider his stance and retract the directive before it causes irreparable damage to the party.
He also noted that many candidates and party loyalists might find it difficult to forgive Bafarawa if the party suffers from this decision.
The Sokoto State Independent Electoral Commission has scheduled the local government elections for September 21, 2024.
