Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has officially launched a groundbreaking Mobile Veterinary Clinics programme aimed at providing free veterinary services across the state’s 27 local government areas. This initiative, the first of its kind in Jigawa and Nigeria, aligns with the administration’s 12-point agenda to improve the lives of citizens, particularly those in rural and nomadic communities.
Speaking at the launch in Garbau village, Miga Local Government Area, Governor Namadi emphasized the transformative impact the programme will have on the state's economy, especially for the Fulani communities whose livelihoods depend on livestock.
Key components of the programme include the provision of motorcycles, free veterinary services, and a continuous supply of veterinary drugs to improve livestock health. "Each local government will receive five fully equipped motorcycles, making a total of 535 mobile veterinary clinics across the state," the Governor explained.
The governor also highlighted the commitment of local governments to ensuring a steady supply of medicines and vaccines, ensuring the long-term success of the programme and the health of livestock throughout Jigawa.
"This initiative ensures that every resident of Jigawa benefits from government efforts to improve their lives, no matter where they live," he said, adding that it will significantly enhance food security and boost the rural economy.
Governor Namadi also announced complementary programmes aimed at supporting nomadic communities, particularly the Fulani. These include the renovation of nomadic schools, employment of 235 nomadic teachers—80% of whom are Fulani—and the introduction of a programme to purchase milk from Fulani herders at fair prices, providing them with a stable income.
The governor further stressed the importance of maintaining harmony between farmers and herders by safeguarding cattle routes and enhancing grazing reserves, equipped with watering points to promote peaceful coexistence between communities.
