Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has called on the leadership of the Nigeria National League (NNL) to promote fairness, transparency, and inclusiveness in its operations to encourage the growth of football at the grassroots level.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Nigeria National League in Bauchi, the Governor emphasized the need to provide a level playing field for all participating clubs, regardless of their size or resources. He noted that such inclusiveness would not only foster healthy competition but also enhance the credibility of the league.
Governor Mohammed highlighted the importance of a well-structured and fair football league system as a tool for unity, social integration, and youth empowerment. He stressed that the NNL must remain committed to upholding the values of integrity and sportsmanship in all its activities.
He further acknowledged the significant role the NNL plays in the development of football in Nigeria, noting that by nurturing young talents and providing a competitive platform for clubs across the country, the league has contributed immensely to the future of Nigerian football.
Represented by his Deputy, Auwal Jatau, Governor Mohammed reassured league officials that his administration is committed to supporting sports activities by creating an enabling environment for youth engagement through football and other sporting endeavors.
"Today's gathering is a testament to the importance of the Nigeria National League in nurturing talents and promoting grassroots football. It also reminds us of the unifying power of sports in our country. We are proud to host this important meeting that brings together key stakeholders of the second-tier league, which has significantly contributed to the development of Nigerian football," the Governor said.
He also highlighted his administration's investments in sports infrastructure to promote youth participation in various sports activities and commended the NNL leadership for their commitment to excellence and maintaining high standards in football across the country.
"The NNL has been a pillar of grassroots football, fostering local talents and ensuring the spirit of competition remains vibrant across all regions. I am confident that the deliberations and resolutions of this AGM will pave the way for a brighter and more successful Nigerian National League," he added.
In his remarks, NNL Chairman, Mr. George Aluo, reaffirmed the board's commitment to providing a level playing field for all teams. He urged stakeholders to support ongoing reforms within the league to achieve the desired objectives.
