Professor Baba Gana J. Kabir, Executive Director of the Lake Chad Research Institute, has extended his heartfelt sympathy to the government and people of Borno State in light of the devastating flood that struck Maiduguri following the collapse and overflow of the Alau Dam.
In his statement of sympathy, Prof. Kabir noted that numerous families have been rendered homeless as the flood caused significant destruction in the Borno State capital.
He called on the government to implement all necessary measures to prevent future occurrences of such disasters. Prof. Kabir also emphasized the need for an immediate and effective response to the crisis, including the development of a new strategic plan and prioritizing the welfare of the victims.
The Executive Director recommended investing in disaster-resistant infrastructure, such as flood barriers, reinforced buildings, and effective drainage systems, as a means to prevent future floods not only in Maiduguri but across the country. He stressed that these measures are essential for saving lives and mitigating potential damage in the future.
Prof. Kabir also urged relevant agencies to enhance their disaster management efforts by focusing on community education and preparedness to handle such issues promptly.
