President Bola Tinubu has officially replaced Betta Edu, the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, with Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda.
Edu was suspended in January following allegations of authorizing the transfer of N585.2 million into the private bank account of a civil servant responsible for handling grants for vulnerable Nigerians.
The action prompted swift intervention from the presidency, with Tinubu calling for a “thorough investigation” by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) into all financial dealings of the ministry.
At the time, Edu’s office defended the transfer, claiming it was meant for the “implementation of grants to vulnerable groups.” However, the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation countered, stating that such funds should have been transferred directly from government accounts to the beneficiaries, raising concerns about mismanagement within the ministry.
