The Managing Director of the National Hydro Electric Power Producing Areas Commission (N-HYPPADEC), Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa (Katikan Yauri), has called for community cooperation in the ongoing needs assessment and community mapping exercise. This appeal was made during his official visit to Wuya-Kede in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, where he sensitized the people on the importance of the exercise.
Yelwa explained that the needs assessment and mapping will help the commission understand the specific challenges and priorities of communities, ensuring that N-HYPPADEC’s interventions are targeted and efficient. Some communities were left out during the initial assessment three years ago, and this ongoing exercise aims to address that gap.
He reassured the communities that N-HYPPADEC is committed to providing both short- and long-term interventions to mitigate the impacts of hydroelectric dams, which have led to loss of lives, properties, farmlands, and livelihoods. He urged the communities to provide relevant information for the successful completion of the exercise.
Yelwa also announced the provision of seven hand pump boreholes for seven village communities within Wuya-Kede Ward, out of a total of 51 communities. He described President Bola Tinubu as a responsive leader, noting that the president had directed a survey of all dams to ensure they pose no threats and can be harnessed for economic and agricultural development.
Yelwa acknowledged that limited funds have hindered timely interventions, hence the focus on short-term solutions like the provision of building materials to identified upland areas for community safety. He added that residents would also receive training in modern farming and fishing techniques.
The seven communities to receive boreholes are Wuya-Kede, Aligeta, Yijuwu, Dobe, Shekpa, Tsogi, and Kpacita.
Earlier, the District Head of Wuya-Kede, Alhaji Musa Abubakar, expressed gratitude to N-HYPPADEC for the visit and highlighted the devastating impact of flooding, which has caused loss of lives, property, and farmland, and has led to the closure of schools and healthcare centers. He called for more intervention projects and praised the commission’s achievements, urging the continuation of its developmental efforts across N-HYPPADEC states.
