The Niger State House of Assembly has urged the state government to fast-track the introduction of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to alleviate the ongoing economic hardship faced by residents.
This motion, brought forward by Hon. Mohammed Abubakar, representing the Chanchaga Local Government Constituency, called for the government to reduce the workweek to three days as a temporary solution to ease the burden on civil servants. He noted that many civil servants are struggling to meet transportation costs, with some walking to work to save money.
However, in his submission, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Barr. Abdulmalik Mohammad Sarkin Daji, emphasized that, with plans underway to increase the minimum wage in the state, it would be more effective to focus on other long-term measures. He suggested that speeding up the introduction of CNG buses would offer a more sustainable solution, as reducing the workweek could have lasting negative impacts on the state's civil service.
After an extensive debate, during which some members expressed differing opinions, the House unanimously resolved to urge the government to expedite the provision of CNG buses as soon as possible to provide immediate relief to citizens.
