Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State, after concluding his activities at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 79), visited the Montefiore Medical Center headquarters in the Bronx, New York. Montefiore is a premier academic health system renowned for its groundbreaking work in research, life-saving cures, patient care innovations, public health advancements, and world-class medical education.

This visit is part of the Governor's broader efforts to expand investments in healthcare delivery through collaborations with leading medical centers in the United States. The goal is to secure direct technical assistance and specialized training for medical professionals in various sub-specialties.

During the visit, Governor Bago was hosted by Dr. Philip Ozuah, a Nigerian-born physician who serves as the President and CEO of Montefiore Medicine, the parent organization of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the Montefiore Health System, which includes 13 hospitals, 300 ambulatory sites, and handles 7.5 million patient encounters annually.

Dr. Ozuah is a nationally recognized physician, executive, researcher, teacher, and author in the United States. He leads an organization with over 10,000 doctors and 53,000 employees, serving a diverse patient base. As a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded researcher and award-winning educator, Dr. Ozuah has significantly expanded access to care for underserved communities and fostered innovations in medicine and science. His leadership has enhanced financial and operational performance at Montefiore, a system that generates over $8 billion in annual revenue.

Through collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Nigerian Consulate in New York, the Government of Niger State plans to partner with Montefiore to improve healthcare access, technology, and human resources for health in the state.
