The National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Niger State has commenced a statewide sensitization and public enlightenment campaign focused on Nigeria’s National Anthem and the National Values Charter.
Speaking at a press conference in Minna on Thursday, Malam Yahaya Gbongbo, the State Director of NOA, announced that the campaign aims to promote national unity, patriotism, and shared values among Nigerians.
"The campaign, running from October to December 2024, focuses on the National Anthem and the National Values Charter," Gbongbo stated.
He highlighted that Nigeria's national consciousness has been challenged in recent years by growing distrust in government institutions, waning loyalty to the state, and a decline in patriotism. The campaign seeks to address these issues by reigniting the spirit of unity, patriotism, and national pride across the country.
Key elements of the campaign include reinforcing loyalty to the nation, promoting civic responsibility, instilling national values in youth, engaging Nigerians in the diaspora, and leveraging media platforms for wider reach.
According to Gbongbo, NOA will partner with media organizations to spread the message of national reorientation. He also explained that the National Values Charter consists of two sections: the Nigerian Promise and the Citizen’s Code.
The Nigerian Promise outlines seven core values represented by elected leaders: equality, democracy, entrepreneurship, peace and security, inclusivity, freedom and justice, and meritocracy.
The Citizen’s Code, on the other hand, consists of seven obligations for citizens, including discipline, duty of care, tolerance and respect, leadership and patriotism, transparency, accountability, integrity, family values, environmental awareness, dignity of labor, resilience, and self-reliance.
Gbongbo urged citizens to actively participate in the campaign, embracing the values enshrined in the National Anthem and the National Values Charter to build a stronger, more prosperous nation.
He called for partnerships with religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organizations, the private sector, and the media to ensure the campaign’s success.
In his remarks, Malam Bala Musa, Deputy Director of Programs at NOA, emphasized that the campaign seeks to foster attitudinal and behavioral change among Nigerians, helping the nation overcome its challenges.
