RTEAN Targets 50% Reduction in Road Crashes, Urges Members to Embrace Pre- and Post-Crash Initiative

The Road Transport Employers' Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) has directed transport workers to adopt the Pre- and Post-Crash Initiative for the Road Transportation Sector. This initiative, developed in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Transportation and other stakeholders, aims to reduce road traffic crashes and ensure swift attention for accident victims.

In a statement signed by RTEAN President Musa Maitakobi and National Secretary Comrade Yusuf Adeniyi, the association emphasized that the directive aligns with the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety (2021-2030), which seeks to reduce road traffic deaths by 50% by 2030.

RTEAN expressed concern that road traffic crashes (RTCs) in Nigeria claim thousands of lives annually and cause varying degrees of bodily harm. Many crash victims, the statement noted, are often left unattended at the crash site, reducing their chances of survival, while survivors frequently face substantial medical costs.

"To address this issue, the Federal Ministry of Transportation, in collaboration with stakeholders in the transportation sector, has initiated the full implementation of the Pre- and Post-Crash Initiative for Nigeria's road transportation sector," the statement read.

RTEAN announced that the initiative mandates all vehicles—private and commercial—to equip themselves with lifesaving tools and skills in compliance with the National Road Traffic Regulation (NRTR) 2012 and the Nigerian Highway Code.

The association added, “RTEAN, empowered by its establishing Act, is mandating that all commercial transport vehicles, both inter- and intra-state, ensure the safety and security of passengers by registering under the Pre- and Post-Crash Initiative. This is especially critical during festive periods, when high passenger volume coincides with increased RTC incidents.”

To ensure compliance, RTEAN is partnering with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (VIO). The union warned that commercial vehicles failing to comply with this directive by November 2024 would face arrest and fines.

"RTEAN will advocate through all available channels that members of the public refrain from patronizing unregistered vehicles to ensure their own safety," the statement continued.

The association highlighted several benefits of the initiative, including access to standardized first aid kits as stipulated by the NRTR 2012 and the Nigerian Highway Code. The kits are intended to assist first responders in providing immediate aid to accident victims, improving their chances of survival until emergency services arrive.

Additionally, each occupant of a registered vehicle is covered by a death or permanent disability benefit of N1.5 million, with medical and emergency treatment coverage of N1 million per registered vehicle.

In case of a road accident, members of the public are encouraged to call the emergency numbers 122 or 112. To claim benefits, contact 07080627000. For more information on the Pre- and Post-Crash Initiative or to participate, call or send a WhatsApp message to 08187196538.
