The wife of Zamfara State Governor, Hajiya Huriya Dauda Lawal, has expressed optimism about having a female chairperson in the next local government council elections in the state.
Speaking during an interview with the press in Gusau, the state capital, Hajiya Huriya described the election of 14 female councillors as a significant milestone for women in the state.
She emphasized the need for council chairmen to provide female councillors with the necessary support and cooperation to enable them to perform their duties effectively.
“We hope to see female councillors being given equal opportunities alongside their male counterparts in handling assignments,” she stated.
The governor’s wife highlighted the crucial role women, as mothers, could play in delivering the dividends of democracy, particularly in sectors such as health and education.
Hajiya Huriya commended the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for encouraging and supporting women to participate in the elections. She expressed satisfaction with the increased number of female candidates, noting that this was the first time Zamfara State had such a significant representation of female councillors.
She further appealed to women to engage in widespread sensitization efforts to encourage greater female participation in politics, aimed at reducing the marginalization of women in decision-making processes.
