The Arewa Development Initiative (ADI) has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate and arrest Justice Danladi Umar, the former Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT). The group alleges that Umar unlawfully forced his way back into office after being dismissed by the National Assembly in November over allegations of corruption and misconduct.
In a statement issued in Abuja, ADI spokesperson Ahmed Musa condemned Umar’s actions, describing them as a direct affront to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Assembly, and the judiciary. Musa criticized the former CCT chairman for disregarding the rule of law, highlighting the severity of forcing his return to office after being lawfully removed.
Drawing attention to historical precedents, the group noted that Umar himself had presided over the removal of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, in 2018 and cited the Senate's 2003 dismissal of Justice Dahiru Saleh, who both adhered to due process without engaging in similar misconduct.
The group warned that Umar’s actions could disrupt the leadership of a critical agency responsible for ensuring ethical conduct within public service. ADI urged President Tinubu to intervene and uphold discipline, asserting that tolerating such indiscipline under his administration could undermine national stability.
On November 20, the Senate had passed a resolution for Umar’s removal following several petitions accusing him of corruption and misconduct. The Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions conducted multiple hearings, leading to his dismissal.
ADI emphasized that failure to address Umar’s behavior would set a dangerous precedent, threatening both national stability and the credibility of President Tinubu’s administration.
