Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has flagged of the rebuilding of the Malam Abdulkarim Juma’at Mosque in Zaria City today Sunday.
The Governor who commended Alhaji AbdulSamad Isyaka Rabiu who was the chief launcher, also thanked other donors at the groundbreaking of the reconstruction of the historic mosque.
The 187 year old Malam Abdulkarim Juma’at Mosque caved in August 2023 where six people lost their lives and 10 others sustained various degrees of injuries on August 11, 2023.
A committee was set up to raise fund for the rebuilding the mosque in October last year, where billions of naira was realised.
Governor Uba Sani promised that the project will be completed in the next one and half years by the grace of God.
He noted that people of goodwill from far and near have responded promptly to the appeal funds to rebuild the historic mosque.
The speed and manner in which people responded is a testament to the high esteem in which this great monument is held and the place of religion in our personal and national life.
The Governor praised the Emir of Zazzau, Malam Ahmed Nuhu Bamali for his inspirational leadership since the tragic incident occurred, adding that the Royal Father has been “working round the clock to ensure that a befitting edifice is erected here.
Earlier in his welcome address the emir of Zazzau, Malam Ahmed Bamalli, has said that the decision to demolish 188-year old Malam Abdulkarim Central Mosque Zaria, was a painful decision that weight heavily upon the Emirate Council.
Bamalli said the decision was not made lightly but the emirate had no option than to take the decision as the safety of lives remained the top priority of the council.
He commended the Kaduna State Government for supporting the victims of the 2023 Mosque collapse, paying compensation of houses affected by expansion of the Mosque project among other initiatives.
He also lauded the highest donation of N2 billion by Alhaji Abdussamad Isyaka-Rabi’u through the ASR Africa and BUA Group.
According to him the historic Mosque, built in the 1830s had served as a beacon of faith, community engagement and resilience.,
In his speech the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Abbas Tajudeen said the collapsed Mosque was one of the biggest and largest historical heritage of building technology in Nigeria.
The speaker, who is also the member representing Zaria Federal Constituency and a traditional title holder of “Iyan Zazzau”, said the rebuilding of the central Mosque has about 18 months completion period.
He said the resources available would only be able to reach 50 per cent completion, urging philanthropists to donate generously for timely completion of the gigantic project.
The speaker restated the commitment of the National Assembly towards supporting the timely completion of the project.
