Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has inaugurated a 16-member State Standing Committee for Shura, an Islamic consultative council. The inauguration ceremony was held at the Council Chamber of the Government House in Minna.

Governor Bago explained that the committee members were carefully selected based on their proven track records and significant roles in society, particularly in Islamic affairs. He urged the members to justify the confidence reposed in them by diligently working to fulfill their mandate.

The committee's responsibilities include serving as a reliable Islamic advisory body for the governor and the Niger State Government on matters strictly related to Islam. It will also promote compassion, justice, equality, and dignity for all Nigerlites through mutual consultations, collective deliberations, and good governance. Furthermore, the committee is tasked with addressing causes of intra- and inter-religious conflicts as referred by the Bureau for Religious Affairs and recommending lasting solutions for peace in the state.

The governor emphasized that the committee should act with integrity, uphold the dignity of the state, and avoid any actions that could tarnish their reputation or that of the government. He also called on the members to act with the fear of Allah, engage in prayers and supplications for the success of their assignments, and fulfill other religious obligations.

The Shura Committee is chaired by Sheikh Alhaji Adamu Yakatun, Chief Imam of Bida and Chairman of the Niger State Imams Forum, with Dr. Umar Farooq Abdullahi, Director-General of the Niger State Bureau of Religious Affairs, serving as secretary.

Other members include Sheikh Muhammad Ilyasu Abdulmalik, Chief Imam of Kontagora; Mal. Muhammad Shehu, Chief Imam of Borgu; Sheikh Muhammad Kudu, Chief Imam of Agaie; Mal. Ridwan Nasir, Chief Imam of Suleja; Mal. Hassan Baba, Chief Imam of Lapai; Mal. Isah Jibrin Imam, Chief Imam of Minna; and Mal. Umar Aliyu, Chief Imam of Kagara.

The committee also includes Dr. Sulaiman Salahuddeen Omotosho, representative of CMS; Mal. Muhammad Usman, representative of the Imams Forum; Mal. Aliyu Adarawa, representative of JIBWIS Kaduna; Mal. Abubakar Abu Sumayya, representative of JIBWIS Jos; Sheikh Muhammad Isah Kutigi, representative of Tijjaniyya; as well as Aisha Abdulkareem Sambo and Hajiya Kulu Abdullahi, representatives of FOMWAN.

The committee is expected to use its collective expertise, experience, and wisdom to advise the governor and government on Islamic matters, foster peace and development, and promote good governance. It will play a vital role in ensuring compassion, justice, and shared responsibility in governance, while addressing religious conflicts and strengthening unity among Nigerlites.
