The Niger State Government has strongly denied reports circulating in some media outlets and on social media platforms that the convoy of Governor Umaru Bago was attacked by suspected bandits in the Mashegu Local Government Area.
In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the government described the reports as baseless, false, and unfounded. According to the statement, the Governor’s convoy has been conducting a smooth and uninterrupted tour of ongoing projects across the Niger North Senatorial District since last week.
Governor Bago's tour has been peaceful, with no incidents of attacks or threats to his safety or that of his team. On the contrary, the statement noted that the Governor has been warmly received by community members in all the locations he has visited.
Security personnel, in collaboration with local law enforcement, have been steadfast in ensuring the safety of the Governor and all participants involved in the tour.
The Niger State Government expressed disappointment with some media practitioners for disseminating false and misleading information. The government emphasized the need for responsible journalism and urged the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger State Council, to ensure that only trained journalists are allowed to practice. It also called on trained journalists to uphold the ethics of the profession, reminding them of their critical role as the fourth estate in nation-building.
The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and development of the state, while urging the public to disregard the misleading reports.
