The Niger State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Mine Workers (NUMW), Comrade Musa Adamu Nasko, has accepted a call by members of the union to contest for the position of National President of the union.
Nasko accepted the call after members of the Niger State chapter presented him with a nomination form to participate in the forthcoming national leadership election.
The members said they considered his candidacy necessary to bring about positive changes in the leadership of the union, citing his contributions to the development of the union and his role in establishing what they described as an authentic leadership structure in Niger State.
According to the NUMW Niger State chapter, Nasko has, during his tenure as state chairman, played a significant role in promoting unity, protecting the reputation and interests of the union and its members, and participating actively in matters affecting mine workers across the state.
The union also commended his efforts in coordinating with security agencies, as well as state and federal ministries responsible for mineral resources.
It said such engagements had contributed to creating an enabling environment for the state government to take greater interest in the mining sector, particularly in creating employment opportunities and generating revenue.
The members expressed confidence that Nasko could replicate his achievements at the national level and help reposition the union for greater effectiveness and relevance.
Responding to the resolution, Nasko said the decision was a collective one and that he could not ignore the call of his colleagues.
“This is a community resolution, and we will not ignore the call of our members,” he said.
He attributed the successes recorded under his leadership to the support and encouragement received from his colleagues and other stakeholders.
“Our mission is to work with everyone, benefit from their experience, and advise our colleagues in accordance with the laws governing the mining sector,” Nasko said.
He pledged to remain committed to the cause, saying that with the cooperation and support of members, his administration would introduce programmes capable of repositioning the union at the national level.
Nasko further noted that there were investors, both domestic and foreign, interested in investing in Nigeria’s mining sector, stressing the need for stakeholders to work together to create the necessary environment for such investments.
He also said existing legislation had provided opportunities for communities to explore alternative sources of livelihood rather than relying solely on government employment.
According to him, the absence of effective systems to harness these opportunities has contributed to the country’s persistent unemployment challenges, particularly among young people.
He said he would continue to engage stakeholders and governments on ways of harnessing Nigeria’s abundant mineral resources for the benefit of communities and the country at large.
Nasko expressed confidence that, having received the support of members in Niger State, stakeholders across the mining sector would also support his candidacy and the resolution of the state chapter.
Investigation by our correspondent revealed that the election of the national leadership of the union is scheduled for September 27, 2026, with several aspirants expected to contest various leadership positions.
