The National Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Comr. Aisha Ibrahim, has called on members of the association in Niger State to embrace peace for the good of the association.
The NAWOJ National Chairperson made the call during an interaction with members of the association and the inauguration of a caretaker committee for the state chapter at the conference hall of IBB Pen House, Minna, on Tuesday.
Aisha Ibrahim urged Nawojians to set aside all forms of bickering and sentiment to move Niger State NAWOJ forward. She emphasized that it is only in an atmosphere of peace that the association can achieve its set goals.
She explained that the caretaker committee was necessary due to the disagreement that led to the disqualification of the two candidates for the state chairperson's position.
The primary purpose of setting up the caretaker committee, according to her, was to unite all members and conduct an election to usher in a new executive for the state chapter within the next three months.
The Zonal Vice Chairperson of NAWOJ, Zone D, Chizoba Ogbeche, reiterated their mission in Minna, which was to unify members of the association after the disagreement that led to the disbandment of the electoral committee and the disqualification of the two candidates for the chairperson position.
She urged members of the chapter to shun sentiment and support the caretaker committee in the interest of the association.
Earlier in his address, the Chairman of the Niger State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Abu Nmodu, stated that the disbandment of the electoral committee and the inauguration of the caretaker committee were done to ensure unity and avoid polarization of the association along religious and ethnic lines.
He clarified that the state council of NUJ has no personal interest whatsoever, but acted in the interest of peace and to avoid setting a bad precedent.
Comrade Abu Nmodu also urged members of NAWOJ in the state to distance themselves from those causing disharmony and unite for the betterment of the association. He pledged the council's support to the caretaker committee at all times.
Responding, the Chairperson of the Caretaker Committee, Asabe Sule Garba, appreciated the national officers and the Niger State Council of the NUJ for the confidence reposed in them.
She promised that the committee would ensure the purpose for which they were set up is achieved and also solicited the support of the national and zonal secretariats, as well as the Niger NUJ, to actualize their mandate, adding that they would always seek useful advice.
Members of the caretaker committee are Asabe Sule Garba of Federal Information Chapel Chairperson; Maimuna Raji Egigogo of Prestige FM Minna Secretary; Maureen Dibie of Niger State Ministry of Information Chapel; Maryam Musa of Niger State Television; and Ameera Bawa of Radio Niger, Members.
The caretaker committee is also to serve as the electoral committee to usher in a new executive for the state NAWOJ within the next three months.
