The Permanent Secretary and Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, Dr. Zaki Abubakar-Zaki, has provided detailed explanations regarding the relocation of certain departments from the hospital to Kebbi State Teaching Hospital, Kalgo.
Addressing a press conference in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday, Dr. Abubakar-Zaki stated: "This press briefing is organized to address speculations surrounding the relocation of certain departments from Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital to Kebbi State Teaching Hospital, Kalgo."
He explained that the previous administration had initiated efforts to relocate some departments to Kalgo to enable the remodeling and reconstruction of Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital.
“At the inception of this administration, His Excellency, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, visited Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital and pledged to reconstruct and remodel the facility to give it a befitting status. This led the government to set up a committee, headed by the Commissioner for Health, to develop seamless modalities for the relocation of specific departments,” the CMD said.
Dr. Abubakar-Zaki acknowledged the inconveniences caused by the relocation but assured that measures were in place to mitigate the impact on staff and patients accustomed to Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital.
The departments slated for relocation include Medicine, Surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Physiotherapy, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), and Dental services.
He noted that essential services such as Accident and Emergency (A&E), Maternity Unit, Paediatrics, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Dialysis, Laboratory, and X-ray would continue at Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital until the modernization process is complete.
The relocation aims to facilitate the reconstruction of affected buildings and the installation of advanced medical equipment. Patients requiring services from the relocated departments will receive their medical records for presentation at the new location.
To ease the transition, Dr. Abubakar-Zaki announced that transportation arrangements, including buses for staff and patients and ambulances for emergency cases, would be provided between Birnin Kebbi and Kalgo.
He concluded by assuring that, upon completion, Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital would be fully equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to offer comprehensive training for all medical professionals.
